Daphne Tangutica. While most daphne shrubs are prized mainly for their fragrant flowers, Daphne tangutica not only flowers in profusion and over a long period, but also bears numerous red fruits. The berry production extends the ornamental interest of this broadleaf evergreen into nearly three seasons. It's native to the highland forests of southwestern and central China, including Tibet. The yellow-green branches become purplish-red and brown on this upright but rounded plant. The leathery dull, deep green leaves are oblong and tapered, sometimes with a notched tip. Clusters of six to eight flowers occur on branch tips mainly from mid-spring to early summer, although intermittent flowers may appear in late winter and in early fall. The flowers are white but flushed with hints of purple or pink. Fleshy red fruits adorn the branches by midsummer and linger for a few months. The foliage remains across the winter unless excessive cold or drought stress occurs. Grow Daphne tangutica in moist, well-drained soils that are slightly acidic to alkaline in ph. Organic matter in the soil improves soil fertility and drainage. Mulch the soil to keep the roots cool and moist, especially in hot summer regions. Afternoon shade is also recommended in such areas. Use this evergreen daphne in a mixed border or in a partially sunny woodland garden. It looks attractive among dwarf conifers and tall-growing perennials, too. The fragrant blossoms are a welcome addition to entrance beds around house entrances and under open windows.
